(Another) repost: The go-betweens's Acoustic Stories (the mp3's)

Here's another repost.
I assume many of you, if you are go-betweens' fans, already know the "That striped sunlight sound"DVD, which is divided into two sections: one the proper concert, and two the Acoustic Stories part, where Robert and Grant talked about their career and performed 11 songs out of it in splendid stripped-down acoustic versions. I had been looking for the MP3's of that acoustic performance for a long time but with no luck, then I finally rolled up my sleeves, found the right software and did it myself: it took me some time so I really hope you appreciate it.
I have also decided to create two zip files: one with the "complete"acoustic stories (including all the talks inbetweens songs), and one songs-only.

These are the Go-Betweens' B-Sides to their 2000-years Singles (and the Worlds Apart EP), a quite hard to find treasure. Plus the 7'' edit to Finding You and, as some kind of bonus track, a Suicide At Home live in Munich in 1999.

Robert Forster Live Subterania 1991

This one is quite peculiar. The quality of the recording is not so good, actually only half decent. But still: it is quite a set from a period (early 90's) from which boots (of Forster's live stuff) are hard to find. Plus, I love the tracklist, you know I think Robert played in his early career some of his best music (aka the "Danger in the past" record) and some great from the GoBs repertoire (among these: a very rare acoustic redition of Part company).

I have also found a review of the concert from those days, so I'll quote some of it:

[...] Barely communicative, borrowing drinks from the audience, 'Is This What You Call Change' and 'Part Company' are edgy and quavering, open-heart surgery with a battered acoustic. But he has more muscle to call on, a drilled new German band to give his songs a more resolute, wired flavour.

[...] Forster has re-invigorated his old songs, given them sharp new arrangements where Franc Schmiechen's swirling organs is as prominent as the twin guitars. So 'People Say' - "One of the ten best pop songs ever written", claims its writer modestly - gets a stirring exhumation and 'The House That Jack Kerouac Built' becomes the dense, rich epic it always threatened to be.

Forster soon finds his confidence, of course; an arch, detachedly flamboyant performer who behaves like a 19th century poet with an Open University degree in rock 'n' roll. Newer solo material like 'Dear Black Dream' and 'Leave Here Satisfied' balance faintly camp melodrama with cohesive power surges unimaginable in The Go-Betweens.

Last two songs are suppossed to be with Grant Mclennan. No doubt about Clouds, but I can't really hear Grant on Danger in the past.

Live Subterania 1991

Grant McLennan Live 1995, Brussels

I had promised myself to post more stuff about the go-betweens, so I kind of saw it as a sign when I found this one, a Grant McLennan's concert from his 1995 tour. It is an audience recording, but a very (very) good one. Plus, as you may know if you are a GoBes'fan: there are not many McLennan boots out there (from his solo career). Actually I think I own only another one, (the radio shows) and that's it.

About the actual bootleg: there are quite good songs in here, although I can't really say I love his band or its sound (it may be the recording but the second/electric guitar lacks room and character), mainly because it is some kind of semi-acoustic concert struggling sometimes to sound big. Let's say I find the more stripped down songs (and the ballads) more convincing than the rockers (I have always thought that McLennan's talent was a a natural match with ballads...). Anyway, good versions of Clouds, Horsebreaker star (one of my favourites among his) etc, and some weird stuff (the last I know why, an unreleased one I suppose...really weird, much like Tallulah's Cut it out).

The Go-Betweens: Live 2005-10-28 Kaserne , Basel , Switzerland

At last another Go-Betweens' bootleg. After this one I'll have to start reposting some of the old ones (most of the old links had to be taken down). So don't worry: there will be many more to come.

Anyway: this is from the GoBes' last tour and it has a quite peculiar tracklist. First because of two song from McLennan's and Forster's solo career: Don't you cry for me no more and Justice (which I like a lot!). Plus there is a nice rendition of the then unreleased Did she overtake you (later recorded in Robert Forster's "The Evangelist").

About the sound quality: this is an audience recording, but don't get frightened by the not so good quality of the first (and part of the second) track: after that the sound does get better.

The Go-Betweens: Live in Brisbane 1986

It's been very long since the last time I posted some "new" Gobs' bootleg, and this one really had to be uploaded, being from one of their most interesting periods (their shift from a 4 piece combo to a 5 piece, with Amanda Brown on violin and oboe duty mostly) and sounding simply great.
The tracklist is amazing, with some pearls too: some very good backing vocals by McLennan on Don't let him come back (this could be its best live performance ever, imo), a good rock-sounding Head full of steam, a beautiful (and quite rare) version of Twin layers of lightning, an edgy rendition of That way, and an extra funny People say.
About the recording: this comes from a soundboard, hence the very good quality (there's only a light hiss in the background).

The Go-Betweens: Live in Hamburg 1986

I haven't posted a Gobs' bootleg in quite a long time (a whole year), so it is definitely time for me to start again and, plus, with one of my favourite periods of the band, when they had just become a five piece ensemble and were starting to write great pop songs (while they still had some very new wake-like/edgy songs in the repertoire).
In fact, this is one of the very first concerts with Amanda Brown (on violin and, I suppose, keyboards) in the band given that, according to David Nichols' biography of the band, she joined the group around April 1986 and this german gig is supposed to date back to June of the same year. The new element does bring some new nuances to the live renditions of many songs and, though many pieces are still to be worked properly maybe, there is an appealing rawness in this concert when some songs seem to punch harder than ever (One thing can hold us, In the core of a flame, Palm sunday) although -yes- there are some weird arrangements, too mostly because of the keyboard (Bachelor kiss, I work in a health spa).
The bootleg is an audience recording, but a quite decent one.

Live in Hamburg 1986

The Go-Betweens: Live in Manchester 1987-05-01

I haven't posted a Go-Betweens' boot in a very long time, and it seems kind of right to do t just after the 200000 visits (not that it matters that much, but still...), and so I pulled out one of the not-so-many bootlegs of theirs I havent' uploaded here yet.
This "Live in Manchester" (at the International, in May 1, 1987) is an audience recording (but a good one), and it features what maybe was my favourite line-up of the band, i.e. the one with five members but with Vickers still on bass, plus it has some little gems: one of the seldom live renditions of Don't call me gone, my two favourite GoBes' b-sides (This girl, black girl and When people are dead), and You tell me, a quite weird number from "Tallulah" that I've always loved but that they almost quit playing after this tour. Moreover I love this version of Man o' sand to girl o' sea.

Live in Manchester 1987

The Go-Betweens: Tallulah (The Expanded Edition)

I know how poorly this album is usually considered, and by the Go-Betweens too, as anyone can see by reading the Forster-McLennan interview on their whole career in the 80's @ the Go Betweens' Archive page, where Forster, talking about "Tallulah", says: "...we were sort of cursed. We had the engineer that we were using on Liberty Belle, Dicky Preston, and working with Dicky was good. We then went on to the next one and we were put into this horrible studio–..." and then "And so Dickey didn't do a good job I think on Tallulah, so it had to be rescued and remixing a little but which always sounds horrible ...". But I also completely agree with him when he says: "...Tallulah really could have been the big, dark masterpiece, and I don't know, we didn't… really…hit it. But it's good."
Yeah, that's really true, I mean, look at some of the songs in the album: there is Someone else's wife ("It's a fine line between love and despair/Do you know the times I've waited on your stair?"), The house that Jack Kerouac built ("With friends like these; you're damned as well/Keep me away from her"), Hope then strife ("Never gonna be the one /Who said you were the one /Who liked the lonesome life"), and then there's the whole (and one-of-a-kind type of song in the GoBes' canon) intense The Clarke sisters.
But yes: the production of "Tallulah" brings out the worst of the eighties' music: it's almost hard to listen to this version of Right here (when compared to the oh-so-much-better live rendition of it)... Plus there is Cut it out, possibly the worst Go-Betweens' song ever.
And that's one of the reasons why I have uploaded the bonus disc too: the demos of Right here and I just get caught out do give more justice to Forster's and McLennan's songwriting skill. Moreover the B-side When people are dead is a beautiful gem.
One more thing: this two-discs edition of "Tallulah" got out of print...why?

The Go-Betweens: Los Conciertos de Radio 3 (2001)

I don't know why but I was fairly certain that I had alrealy posted this, when I actually haven't... So what happened is that I found the video of the GoBs' performance @ Radio 3, I went and check the whole thing (if I had posted the Radio 3 bootleg or not), and it turned out I didn't. Which is kind of a shame because it is a very good boot. It's just eight songs, but I like the performance a lot (a very simple semi acoustic rendition of then new songs from their comeback "The friends of Rachel Worth" and some old ones), and being able to watch almost the whole showcase (alas the last Love is a sign got left out of the TV broadcast) is definitely a plus (so yes, I split the video into four parts and uploaded them to youtube).

(I'm still thinking over the idea of collecting a sort of "Best Of" GoBs' bootlegs, so if you have some concerns, some ideas, suggestions or whatever just tell me. And if you have some pictures of the band: send them over to me, please, I'll sure need them for future posts).

Los Conciertos de Radio 3

The Go-Betweens: Live Zeleste, Barcelona, Spain, May 17, 1989

It's been a while since my last post about the Go-Betweens (almost two months!), and so I started digging into my hard disk, and I picked this one up, a very good bootleg indeed: quite long tracklist (18 songs) and a couple of rare moments in it. Which are: the weird intro to Love is a sign (and with violin pizzicatos), and (above all) Bob Dylan's Hurricane (it's just a pity that the recording does not start at the very beginning of the song). Plus, this version here of Clouds (more or less the same of the "Fools in love" boot) is possibly my favourite ever (the one with the "oceanic" drumming...), and then great finale for both Streets of your town (a funky one!) and Karen.

So, one more thing before I go, one more time: if any of you has any GBs photos, would you be so kind to upload them and send me the link (as a comment)? I'm really running short on pictures here (this one above is Razzmatazz in Barcelona, same bulding as Zeleste, new name -if I'm not mistaken)

The Go-Betweens: Live 2003-05-09,Darmstadt,Germany

Here comes another Gb's boot, this one from the Bright Yellow Bright Orange Tour: long tracklist, pretty good recording, and I'd say that it's worth having also because of The house that Jack Kerouac built, a song played only rarely live during their post-2000 career (and maybe one of the most underated songs in their whole repertoire, and possibly one of my favourites -as it often is when it comes to many songs from "Tallulah" which lacked the proper production, or at least imho).

PS That night the supporting artist was Richard Hawley. The picture was taken (I don't remember by whom, sorry about that) from a concert from the previous year.

Robert Forster: Sex God (Disc 1 & 2)

"Sex God" is a collection of precious bootleg recordings of Robert Forster's spanning from live recordings dating from 1991 to 1996, and including also some "Danger In The Past" demos. Which means: a lot of stuff, and quite rare too (there seems to be not many Forster's boots out there from the nineties), and I mean to make a point when I say that, for example, it is a great joy to be able to listen to (what probably is) the first public performance of When she talks about angels (from the "Mark Radcliffe" radio sessions at BBC Radio One), and I personally could never get tired of listening to Danger in the past (the album demos obviously do not sound perfect, but they are very good and of great interest: it is, for instance, captivating to see how I've been looking for somebody can sound good also without (that wonderful sounding) piano).
Also among my favourites: the plain, simple solo acoustic rendition of Love is a sign (from Disc 2), Grant Hart's acoustic 2541 (I actually thought it should have made it to the Intermission Best Of instead of Frisco Depot, and not only because I love Husker Du) and Rock 'n' roll friend of course (though nothing can beat the 1987 KCRW radio sessions).
And last (but not least) a big big thank you to Uli who managed to upload this for me (and for you, yeah).

Robert Forster: Live San Francisco (Sept. 10th 2008)

Here is another boot on Robert's splendid 2008 tour, but actually a special one to me. Mainly because of two very simple reasons called Girl lying on the beach (probably my favourite go-beteens' b-side ever, really! I do think it was a real blame it never made it to the tracklist of some album: it would have been a perfect fit for "Bright Yellow, Bright Orange"), and From ghost town (the heartbreaking ending to last year's "The Evangelist").

Plus, the first part of the set is all acoustic (voice + acoustic guitar + bass), and very intense.
As always when it comes to this extraordinary tour the gig is very long, which means more than 30 tracks. Yes, the sound is not perfect (a decent audience recording), but the performance is so good that it's hard to care about the rest.

I do hope you enjoy all of this.

Robert Forster: Live In Copenhagen (2008-09-28)

Yes, people sometimes do tend to go back to the "crime scene": in this case RobertForster got back to Vega, Copenhagen where he performed with The Go-Betweens during the 2000 tour (I posted the Vega 2000 boot, btw) and I'm SO glad he did because this soundboard recording bootleg of that gig is really a treat, a gift to all GBs fans out there: we're talking about a long set (over 2 hours!) spanning through Forster's whole career, including also some of gbs' least frequently live played songs (I'm allright and Rock'n'roll friend), Robert singing one of Grant's GBs' songs (and one of his best: Quiet heart, I think a regular one of The Evangelist tour), an Heart out to tender (from the "Danger in the past" LP) I didn't remember so fine, several numbers from The Evangelist, and many many others (my fave bits: a Something for myself never so intimate before, a When she sang about angels with a brand new and really beautiful acoustic guitar solo in the middle).
In short terms: a topnotch bootleg (both for the the performance itself and for the quality of the recording), of which I have no problem saying it would probably fit among a Top 5 of all the go-betweens-oriented bootlegs I've posted.

The Go-Betweens: Live @ Wellington, New Zealand, February 12, 1985

First of all I'd like to thank Uli for giving me this wonderful boot. Because it is a great boot: excellent sound, plus it includes one of the rare live recordings of River of money (as final song: the cd from which it was ripped had some damage hence the noises at the end, still a great thing).
But what is most intriguing of this whole performance is seeing the Go-Betweens right before becoming a more pop-rock-oriented ensemble: in fact many of the songs performed can still be considered inside the new wave "canon" (many from "Before Hollywood", and then -as I said before- the brave spoken word of River of money).
I also hope you enjoy the nice picture I managed to find (from one of my old music magazines). And if any of you has any image of the gbs that can be of some interest feel free to upload it and give me the link, it'd be highly appreciated.

Live @ Wellington 1985

Grant McLennan: Live Sydney, AUS (10-06-91)

As promised I've uploaded a Grant McLennan solo bootleg, an audience recording of an acoustic performace @ Rose, Shamlock and Thistle in Sydney back in 1991. The audio quality, being taped by some fan in the audience, has obivios flaws, yet listening to McLennan playing basic guitar-and-guitar or guitar-and-bass is always worth it (I must have already mentioned how I found hard to like certain of his live electric arrengements). Btw McLennan is supposed to be accompanied here by Phil Kakulas on stand-up bass.

But don't worry, there'll be one more boot of Grant's solo material a-comin', just be patient: I'll post some non-go-betweens stuff before (but also some great -great!- gbs' bootlegs I've just got my hands on...).

One more call to Go-Betweens' fans out there: do you have any person pictures of the band (from the 80's, 90' or present days)? I start having troubles finding the right photo for the right bootleg (i.e. the picture being more or less of the same period as the recording), so any help is appreciated. If you will just upload it and give me the link or let me know through the comments.
